culture | same day MMJ cards?!

Hey gang--

Hope you're all having a great week. I've been in a bit of a funk lately myself. I guess it's just that time of year, but I'm just taking life one day and one bowl at a time (how else?!)

If you hadn't yet heard, the Nevada State Division of Public and Behavioural Health has just expanded and opened a second card processing location here in Vegas, at 2300 W Sahara Suite 800. The site will process medical marijuana card applications for Nevada residents, and the best part? They say they'll approve same day!

What?!

If you've been around for a while or if you're an OG cardholder then you know this is huge! They've been streamlining the process and it's true that even a month after I got my card the process improved significantly but even then it still took a month or more for patients to get approval. There is no grace period wherein you can legally consume before your application is approved, so back in the day many patients would have to go without--or risk getting arrested--while they waited to become legal. No good!

This improvement is not only great for them but a positive sign for the movement as a whole. Nevada has recognized how many people will benefit from this program--certainly more than who benefit from prohibition--and they are making steps towards what may surely be recreational legalization in the fall.

There are, of course, many roadblocks left before the system is truly accessible to all. The application process is expensive and there are few opportunities for need-based grants. However, as we continue to expand this community, I think we will find that all the pieces fall into place.

I'm off to do a few dabs of Agent Orange and see about some onion rings...drop me a comment below and let me know your thoughts on the new location! Until next time xx

culture | 3rd annual las vegas hempfest

Good morning, lovelies! Hope you're staying cool in this summer heat...phew!

Yesterday I went to the third Las Vegas Hempfest--my first since moving here and becoming a legal Nevada patient. It was great!

{ that's a bong!!! }

Hempfest is open to everyone, regardless of patient status, so it was a huge event full of every kind of person you can imagine. There were dozens of vendors, from my friends at Dope and Vegas Cannabis magazines, to glass vendors, dispensaries and NORML. My favourite, by far, was the traveling hemp museum. I love weed and I'll continue to fight for its legalization, but lately I've been really turned on to hemp. I may even write about it someday. Anyway, the traveling hemp museum goes to events like this specifically to share the wonders of hemp and to detail its controversial history. I loved hearing what they had to say and learned a ton at their booth.

{ of course theirs was the only card I wanted to keep and the only one I cannot find. whoops! I will track down their info and update soon }

Outside of the vendors, they had a number of food trucks (I had a burrito, which I ate before I snapped, but trust you me, it was worth every cent!), alcohol vendors (I don't drink but some of the blended drinks looked great!), artists and musicians. They even had a small amusement park setup and water attractions at the front of the fest, but it didn't seem like there were a lot of kids or people of any manner using them--so they might consider a different attraction next year.

{ most of the photos I took were of glass...typical Ruthie! }

Though the event was open to all, there were a few areas that were for patients only, like the dispensary village (as they called it). I suppose the nature of their business is why they had to be separate from the rest of the fest--as far as I'm aware no cannabis was actually sold at Hempfest, although some of the dispensaries had shuttles back to their storefront for those who wanted to buy. If it is recreationalized next year, I think we could probably expect to see cannabis and related products sold at the event! What an exciting prospect. (As an aside, because I know I wondered before I went--although weed wasn't sold at the event, there didn't seem to be a lot of concern about those bringing it in to the event. I had my patient card with my bud to be safe, but was never harassed about either. If you do choose to bring medication or medicate at an event, be aware of your rights!)

I was on a budget so I didn't go too wild, but I did pick up some cool schwag:

{ my first ever one-hitter! }

{ I say this every time I buy a new bong, but this is my favourite piece! so small but super efficient. I call her Sunny! }

{ some new reads...VCM beat me to the punch but check out their newest issue for their piece on the Agent Orange shatter! it's life-changing, I swear. }

{ I'm going to write more about these products later this week, so keep an eye out! }

{ don't mind me, just a little sunburnt and sun sick! }

This was a tight event, but I did have a few small complaints. First of all, the first week of June...in Vegas...outside?! Are they nuts?!?! I know this is the time of year that cities traditionally have their Hempfest or Cannabis Cups, but it was just too hot for me! I ended up getting sick and having to leave after a couple of hours, despite the event running until early Sunday. There were shady spots to sit and water was available for purchase, but it was still too damn hot to think. I hope that in future years they'll rethink the location--or the date--to make it a bit more comfortable for all of us to enjoy! If it is at the same time next year, I'd definitely recommend going later in the evening (I was there in the late afternoon) when it starts to cool down.

I was also a bit put off by the lack of directions. Before I bought my ticket I saw a map on Instagram, and I even took a screenshot, but when I got to Hempfest it was really difficult to find my way around! I talked to a few other patients who agreed. Of course it's nice to wander and find new places, but there were specific areas and displays I was looking for (like where to medicate--I'm still not sure where the right place was, because I personally medicated at will and so did many others!) that I wasn't able to find. I was really excited about some of the musical acts and the Miss Hempfest awards, but missed them due to the confusing setup (where was the second stage??)

Overall I had a great time, and despite my minor complaints, I'm really thankful that our city got to host such a great event. Hempfest is definitely for stoners, but I like to think it goes a little further than that. Lots of cities would never allow an event like this, let alone the dozen+ dispensaries we have, the billboards advertising their presence, the doctors issuing recommendations and the publications--like me!--watching it all. Vegas isn't perfect by any means, but in my opinion we're quickly becoming an example of a city that can and does profit off cannabis both financially and (I guess you could say) in spirit. I've lived in a lot of places where cannabis isn't accepted, so being here is really refreshing. I hope you're enjoying it, too :)

As a final note...I've had a few things come down the pipeline this week and as a result I've neglected to update with our latest Saturday Strains and Fresh Buds...naughty Kween! I should have those up at their regularly scheduled slot this week--thanks for sticking with me, gang :) Stay high!

culture | 2nd annual patient choice awards

Hi all! Hope you're having a safe and happy Memorial Day with those you love. I know I'm enjoying the nice weather and extra time off!

This weekend I had the honour of attending the 2nd annual Patient Choice Awards, which is basically a huge sesh by patients and for patients. It's a safe place to medicate, to try new products and to network with others. It was a blast! The best part to me was that a lot of the patients there make medicated products themselves, so even though it's not available in dispensaries yet I got to sample a ton of goodies! It really makes me hopeful for more events like this, since it's obvious I've only scratched the surface on everything Vegas MMJ has to offer. (I also got a TON of free dabs and a hit off a Thai stick. Thanks to everyone who smoked me out!)

{ all this stuff was included in the goodie bag! }

There were awards as well, and at 7:10 they officially smoked out the building with a quarter pound Jay and a 28 gram slab. Holy shit!

I of course got WAY too stoney and didn't get nearly enough pics but wanted to share a few of what I got!

{ they gave me my first free dab. I hope to meet up with them again and try some more because their shit was fire! }

{ this was my first taste of canna syrup or "lean" and I loved it! I'm not a party girl, I don't do any other drugs or drink but this was tasty as shit.}

{ DEFINITELY gonna hit them up. the topicals are some of the best smelling and they feel great! }

{ I saw a demo for this vape and loved it, I couldn't buy that day but they did give me a coupon so you might see a review for it soon! }

That's only the first floor! Down the stairs there was a restaurant and a kickass lounge to sit and smoke with friends. It was pretty trippy!

The highlight item for me were the Imperial Edibles medicated nachos (which of course I didn't get a picture of). I'm lactose sensitive but the THC must have helped my tummy process the cheese because it handled like a champ!

It already looks like PCA is planning another event later this fall and I will definitely be back! (hopefully this time with more cash so I can pick up some treats) I also think I'll try and go with a group next time--I stopped in alone and while everyone was super friendly I think this would be a fun event for the whole crew.

If you attended, let me know what your fave part was! And if you'll be going again, or for the first time, let me know--lets meet up and smoke! Have a good holiday weekend, friends!

culture | MassRoots v NASDAQ

I've been an avid user of MassRoots for a while now. (If you'd like to follow me, my username there is @meliabug) I started using it a few months ago, when I decided I wanted a more public platform to discuss my medical marijuana usage and to network with other bloggers and patients. Traditional social media like Instagram and Facebook have been particularly unforgiving to cannabis accounts and have locked them out, so I wanted a safe space where I knew my content wouldn't get lost. The app isn't without its glitches, but overall it's a pretty cool concept, and very much what I was looking for. In our industry it's kind of revolutionary!

{ go ahead and follow me. I know you want to... }

Unfortunately, not everyone is in MassRoots' corner. The Denver-based app got dealt a pretty shitty hand on Monday when NASDAQ announced that they would not be able to list their stocks on the exchange.

Although MassRoots is made for those 21 and older in recreational states (or med patients in medical states) and does not actually sell marijuana, NASDAQ feared it encouraged the sale and distribution of narcotics, which is still very much federally illegal.

Though MassRoots certainly wouldn't be the first cannacompany to be publicly traded on the NASDAQ (there are a handful of biotech companies working with cannabis that are NASDAQ listed), it would be the first of its kind, with such heavy ties to patients, consumption and recreational use. And unfortunately, NASDAQ isn't totally wrong--as it stands now, MassRoots is an awesome network for patients, but it's not heavily regulated. This is great for people like me, who want to post pictures of their bud without fear of removal or legal action, but it also creates a community where it's relatively easy to buy, sell or trade your meds, regardless of the legality. In my region, there are a handful of patients, but there are also a lot of people selling weed. In our state and in pretty much every other, that's a huge no-no.

{ almost all the weedy pics I take end up on MR }

However, a lot of MassRoots' shortcomings could easily be fixed, especially with the revenue increase that could come from being publicly traded. MassRoots has a really great concept, but as I mentioned there are some small improvements to be made. Things like better spam detection and patient verification could ensure that the app is used as it was designed (i.e, NOT to sell drugs) and to get greater reach. MassRoots advertises itself as the Favebook for stoners, and I think that with the right funding and support it could be just as profitable and influential.

Unfortunately, it takes money to make money, and with all of the financial regulations cockblocking our industry it can be incredibly difficult to bring a change. Though this specific circumstance deals with NASDAQ and stock trading, it just highlights all of the other challenges we are up against. Dispensaries and cannabis related businesses are still not eligible for bank accounts because cannabis is still federally illegal, which means small cannabusiness is almost unheard of. Dispensary staff and patients alike have to carry cash, sometimes huge amounts, which can be stressful and dangerous. Without the paper trail that comes from card transactions and bank deposits, cannabusinesses are forced to do all their accounting by hand. There are a ton of really great organizations like Women Grow and The ArcView Group, which can help some businesses with their funding and financial needs, but there's still a huge gap waiting to be filled. Decisions like these not only hurt the big players of the industry, they affect us "little guys" who are all but helpless without the big banks behind us.

{ #legalizemymedicine ... thanks to the MassFam for recommending this strain! }

MassRoots does plan to appeal this decision, and depending on what happens could appeal all the way to the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). This could potentially be a groundbreaking decision, so although it's a little extra work for our MassFam, I am optimistic about their battle and excited for the outcome. We're writing history, folks...lets make our grandkids proud!

personal / culture | local happenings & a new feature

High, friends! Hope you're having a great week. I'm loving the warm weather, it's so nice to come home and smoke a bowl outside with my cactus plants.

There are a lot of interesting events coming up in the community this month, and I thought tonight would be a good night to lay out the calendar. Without further ado--

Cloud Wars Glass Class

This meeting is presented by supporters of Yes on Question 2, the motion to legalize recreation marijuana in 2016. Come out and learn more about how YOU can be a part of the journey to legalization! This is an OPEN event (meaning non-patients are encouraged to attend!)

{ they have even more sponsors attending now! }

Patient Choice Awards
May 28 & 29
TBD

The second annual Las Vegas Patient Choice Awards is set for Memorial Day weekend and it's looking lit! This is a patient-only event that will include exhibits, competitions and a variety of vendors--it's my first PCA, but I'm really looking forward to getting another glimpse at the local flavour. Plus, the gift bags themselves are well worth the fee! If you're interested in attending this event, you can visit their Instagram @patientchoiceawardsmmj. Med card verification is required before the event.

Now, on another track...

I wanted to let you guys know about something else that's really exciting in Weed Kween land...I've decided to launch a new feature!

I smoked cannabis for the first time when I was in high school, but didn't begin to use it medicinally until just a few years ago. When I first started to use cannabis, I was overwhelmed! It turns out there is a LOT to smoking weed. How do I get the weed, first of all? What kind should I get? How much do I pay? What do I smoke it with? What about edibles, or topicals, or dabs?

While I try to experiment with as many  products as possible, and share my experiences here with you, I feel like it's time to go "back to basics" in a sense and circle back to some of those questions I had as an early weed smoker. After all, in a few short months, Nevada may decide to legalize recreationally, which could mean a LOT of new smokers in the southwest.

I know it can be an intimidating topic, and I'm here to help. Every Wednesday I'm going to bring you my new feature, Fresh Buds, in which we'll explore all the questions the new patient may have. I encourage my experienced smokers to join in the dialogue and provide wisdom and support to everyone on their paths!

That's all for tonight...I've got a bowl to finish and some Netflix to marathon! Have a good night!

culture | The Dispensary pre-grand opening

I remember reading about this a few weeks back, but I'd completely forgotten about it--it was by sheer luck that I saw a post on MassRoots and decided to swing by.

The Dispensary is at Decatur and Hacienda, which is basically all the way across town from where I work, so it took me about a half hour to get there, arriving just after 5. It was already well under way.

Like Thrive's open house event last week, The Dispensary had hired a cash bar and a food truck (I think it was barbecue but to be honest I couldn't say) right outside of the dispensary. They were also open to the public, meaning that no medicine was on display or available for purchase (all the packaging displayed was empty).

The Dispensary has a set up that's pretty much uniform to all the dispensaries I've visited--the initial "greeting room," the waiting room beyond, and then the actual sales floor. The waiting area had chairs as well as some barstool-type chairs (I'm not sure if those are a permanent fixture or were just placed for tonight's audience). On the sales floor, there's a lot of warm wood and dark colours, and their logo is displayed prominently behind the cash wrap. Their style, to me, is actually kind of reminiscent of Thrive's interior decor.

The staff, fresh out of training, were in attendance tonight, to connect with the community. They connected and blended pretty well--I'm still not totally sure who was a Dispensary employee, who was a vendor and who was a guest! That's kind of awesome, though: I think it helps the entire Yes on 2 campaign for voters to see that cannabis patients are just like anybody else. I was so amazed when I first started visiting dispensaries and saw the wide range of people around. It really helps normalize the whole thing.

The vendors and organizations in attendance included Getting Legal (seriously, they're an awesome resource if you're interested in information about medical marijuana and cannabis law in Nevada); Vegas Cannabis Magazine; Mother Herb Cultivation and KYND Cannabis.

Although they weren't represented there, I was happy to see that they'll be carrying Evergreen Organix edible and infused products, BAM rosin, prerolls by BAM and Deep Roots Harvest, and at least one CBD product. It also looks like they're going to have a decent selection on their menu--their pricing structure kind of reminds me of The Source, and it looks like they'll carry a lot of similar strains.

Another thing I loved to see was the selection of glass and apparel behind the counter. I love a well-stocked dispensary, and that goes beyond the medicine--going somewhere where you can not only pick up your cannabis, but also something to smoke it with (and cool shit because hello, who doesn't like cool shit?!) is so valuable to me. I think this also makes a dispensary more accessible to a newcomer, since your budtender can help you pick not only the right product but the right way to use it.

I didn't stick around for too long, but it took me ages to get home (mostly due to the terrible drivers on the 215). I was curious about how long it would normally take, so I decided to Map the route from my house to The Dispensary. Still about 30 minutes. Bummer.

This is a neat spot, and if I were closer I'd definitely check it out more, but proximity is a huge factor for me and unfortunately, there isn't anything there that I can't get at a dispensary closer or more convenient to me. Still, I definitely recommend checking them out if you're in the area!

The Dispensary's grand opening date is still TBD, but you can follow them @thedispensarynv on Instagram to stay up to date. When they do open, new patients will be eligible for a free preroll with purchase. They're located at 5347 S. Decatur Blvd.
